Broken rib sweater with crew neck and long sleeves

Materials

Patons Beehive Fingering, 3-ply.

Size [A] [B]
Long Sleeves 9ozs 10ozs
Short Sleeves 7ozs 8ozs

Knitting Needles – 1 pair each UK Nos. 10/3.25mm/US 3 and UK 11/3mm/US 2

A Medium Sized Crochet Hook.

One Pair of Shoulder Pads.

Three Press Studs.

Measurements

Long 17½ ins. 17½ ins.

Tension

To get these measurements it is absolutely necessary to work at a tension to produce 8 stitches to the inch in width (slightly stretched.)

Instructions are written for smaller size [A]. Instructions for larger size [B] are written in brackets, thus [B-…]

Pattern

The Front

Using No. 10 Needles, cast on 123 [B-131] stitches.

** 1st row: K1, purl to last st, K1.

2nd row: K1, * K1, P1, repeat from * to last 2 sts, K2.

3rd row: * K1, P1, repeat from * to last st, K1.

Repeat 2nd and 3rd rows once.

6th row: Knit plain.

Repeat 2nd and 3rd rows twice. **

Repeat from ** to ** five times.

Using No. 11 Needles, work 16 rows without shaping.

Using No. 10 Needles, continue in pattern, increasing once at each end of needle in next and every following 6th row,
until there are 145 [B-153] sts on needle.

Work 13 rows without shaping.

Cast off 12 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows, then decrease once at each end of needle in next and every alternate row, until 103 [B-111] sts remain.

Work 46 rows without shaping.

In next row: K38 [B-K40], cast off 27 [B-31] sts, K38 [B-K40].

Continue on last 38 [B-40] sts, decreasing once at neck edge in every row, until 31 [B-33] sts remain

Shape for shoulder as follows:

1st row: K2tog, work in pattern to last 10 [B-11] sts, turn.

2nd and 4th rows: Work in pattern to end of row.

3rd row: Work in pattern to last 20 [B-22] sts, turn.

5th row: Like 2nd row. Cast off.

Join in wool at neck edge and work on remaining sts to correspond with other side.

The Back

Work exactly as given for Front, until arm-hole shapings have been completed (103 [B-111] sts)

Continue in pattern without shaping, until arm-holes measure same as Front arm-holes.

Shape for shoulders as follows:

1st and 2nd rows: Work in pattern to last 10 [B-11] sts, turn.

3rd and 4th rows: Work in pattern to last 20 [B-22] sts, turn.

5th and 6th rows: Work in pattern to last 31 [B-33] sts, turn.

7th row: Work in pattern to end of row. Cast off.

The Long Sleeves

Using No. 11 Needles, cast on 61 [B-67] stitches.

Work as given from ** to ** for Front, twice.

Using No. 10 Needles, continue in pattern, increasing once at each end of needle in next and every following 6th row, until there are 105 [B-111] sts on needle.

then in every following 4th row, until there are 117 [B-123] sts on needle.

Work 9 rows without shaping.

** Cast off 5 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows, then decrease once at each end of needle in next and every alternate row, until 67 [B-73] sts, remain, then in every row, until 49 [B-55] sts remain. Cast off in pattern. **

Work another Sleeve in same manner.

The Short Sleeves

Using No. 11 Needles, cast on 95 [B-101] stitches.

Work as given from ** to ** for Front, once.

Using No. 10 Needles, continue in pattern, increasing once at each end of needle in next and every following 4th row, until there are 117 [B-123] sts on needle.

Work 9 rows without shaping.

Work as given from ** to ** for Long Sleeves.

Work another Sleeve in same manner.

The Neck-Band

Sew up right shoulder seam.

With right side of work facing and using No. 11 Needles. knit up 109 [B-113] stitches evenly round neck.

1st row: * K1, P1, repeat from * to last st, K1.

2nd row: K1, * K1, P1, repeat from * to last 2 sts, K2.

3rd row: Like 1st row.

4th row: K1, purl to last st, K1.

Repeat 2nd and 3rd rows twice.

9th row: Knit plain.

10th row: Like 2nd row. Cast off in pattern.

To Make Up Jumper

With a slightly damp cloth and warm iron, press lightly.

Sew up side and sleeve seams.

Sew up left shoulder seam for 1½ ins. Sew in sleeves, placing seam to seam.

Using Crochet Hook work 1 row of dc (US single crochet) round shoulder opening.

Sew shoulder pads in position.

Sew press studs in position on shoulder opening.
