Carol Sweater/Jumper

Long sleeved crew-neck jumper/sweater with all over lace patterning

This pattern has options for both long and short sleeves

Materials

Patons Beehive Fingering, 4-ply.

Quantities
Long Sleeves – 10 ozs.
Short Sleeves – 8 ozs.

Knitting Needles – 1 pair each UK Nos. 10/3.25mm/US 3 and UK 12/2.75mm/US 2

One Pair of Shoulder Pads.

Measurements

Length from top of shoulder – 19½ in,.
Width all round at under-arm – 34 ins.
Length of sleeve from under-arm:
Long – 17½ ins (or length desired)
Short – 5 ins (or length desired)

Tension

To get these measurements it is absolutely necessary to work at a tension to produce 1 pattern to 1 7/8 inches in width.

NOTE: This jumper may be worn on either side if finished off neatly.

Pattern

The Front

Using No. 12 Needles, cast on 109 stitches.

1st row: K2, * P1, K1, repeat from * to last st, K1.

2nd row: K1, * P1, K1, repeat from * to end of row.

Repeat 1st and 2nd rows nineteen times.

Using No. 10 Needles, proceed as follows:

** 1st row: * K2tog, K3, yo, K1, yo, K3, K2tog tbl, P3, repeat from * to last 11 sts, K2tog, K3, yo, K1, yo, K3, K2tog tbl

2nd and alternate rows: K1, * P10, K3, P1, repeat from * to last 10 sts, P9, K1.

3rd row: * K2tog, K2, yo, K3, yo, K2, K2tog tbl, P3, repeat from * to last 11 sts, K2tog, K2, yo, K3, yo, K2, K2tog tbl

5th row: * K2tog, K1, yo, K5, yo, K1, K2tog tbl, P3, repeat from * to last 11 sts, K1, yo, K5, yo, K1, K2tog tbl

7th row: * K2tog yo, K7, yo, K2tog tbl, P3, repeat from * to last 11 sts, K2tog, yo, K7, yo, K2tog tbl

9th row: yo, K2, K2tog tbl, P3, * K2tog, K3, yo, K1, yo, K3, K2tog tbl, P3, repeat from * to last 4 sts, K2tog, increase once in next st, K1.

10th and alternate rows: K1, P3, * K3, P11, repeat from * to last 7 sts, K3, P3, K1.

11th row: yo, K2, K2tog tbl, P3, * k2tog, K2, yo, K3, yo, K2, K2tog tbl, P3. Repeat from * to last 4 sts, K2tog, increase once in next st, K1.

13th row: K1, yo, K1, K2tog tbl, P3, * K2tog, K1, yo, K5, yo, K1, K2tog tbl, P3, repeat from * to last 4 sts, K2tog, K1, yo, K1.

15th row: K2, yo, K2tog tbl, P3, * k2tog, yo, K7, yo, K2tog tbl, P3, repeat from * to last 4 sts, K2tog, yo, K2.

16th row: Like 10th row. **

Keeping continuity of pattern. as given from ** to **, increase once at each end of needle in next and every following 8th row, until there are 127 sts on needle.

Work 23 rows in pattern without shaping.

Cast off 9 sts at beginning of each of next 2 rows, then decrease once at each end of needle in next and every alternate row, until 93 sts remain.

Work 28 rows without shaping.

In next row, work 37 sts in pattern, cast off 19 sts, work in pattern to end of row.

Continue in pattern on last 37 sts, decreasing once at neck edge in every row, until 28 sts remain.

Work 10 rows without shaping.

Shape for shoulder as follows:

1st row: Work in pattern to last 9 sts, turn.

2nd and 4th rows: Work in pattern to end of row.

3rd row: Work in pattern to last 18 sts, turn.

5th row: Like 2nd row. Cast off.

Join in wool at neck edge and work on remaining sts to correspond with other side.

The Back

Work exactly as given for Front, until arm-hole shapings have been completed (93 sts).

Continue in pattern without shaping until arm-holes measure same as Front arm-holes.

Shape for shoulders as follows:

1st and 2nd rows: Work in pattern to last 9 sts, turn

3rd and 4th rows: Work in pattern to last 18 sts, turn

5th and 6th rows: Work in pattern to last 28 sts, turn

7th row: Work in pattern to end of row. Cast off.

The Long Sleeves

Using No. 12 Needles, cast on 19 stitches.

1st row: K2, * P1, K1, repeat from * to last st, K1.

2nd row: K1, * P1, K1, repeat from * to end of row.

Repeat 1st and 2nd rows thirteen times.

29th row: K2, P1, K1, P1, increase once in next st, * (P1, K1) three times, increase once in next st, (K1, P1) three times, increase once in next st, repeat from * to last 11 sts, (P1, K1) three times, increase once in next st, K1, P1, K2 (67 sts).

Using No. 10 Needles, work in pattern, as given from ** to ** for Front, increasing once at each end of needle in 17th and every following 8th row, until there are 93 sts on needle.

Continue in pattern without shaping until work measures 17½ ins. (or length desired) from commencement. **

Decrease once at each end of needle in next and every alternate row, until 37 sts remain. Cast off. **

Work another Sleeve in same manner.

The Short Sleeves

Using No. 12 Needles, cast on 79 stitches.

1st row: K2, * P1, K1, repeat from * to last st, K1.

2nd row: K1, * P1, K1, repeat from * to end of row.

Repeat 1st and 2nd rows three times, increasing once at each end of needle in last row (81 sts)

Using No. 10 Needles, work in pattern, as given from ** to ** for Front, increasing once at each end of needle in 3rd and every following 6th row, until there are 93 sts on needle.

Continue in pattern without shaping until work measures 5 ins. (or length desired) from commencement.

Work as given from ** to ** for Long Sleeves.

Work another Sleeve in same manner.

The Neck-Band

Sew up right shoulder seam.

With right side of work facing, and using No. 12 Needles, knit up 116 stitches evenly round neck

1st row: K2, * P1, K1, repeat from * to end of row.

Repeat 1st row seven times. Cast off in rib.

To Make Up Jumper

With a slightly damp c10th and warm iron, press lightly.

Sew up side, left shoulder and sleeve seams.

Sew in sleeves, placing seam to seam.

Sew shoulder pads in position.
