Carrying Coat

Materials and Size

Patons Beehive Lady Betty 3 ply

21 inch underarm – 4 balls

Length from top of shoulder – 16½ ins.

Length of sleeve seam – 7 ins.

Knitting Needles, 1 pair each UK Nos. 11/3mm/US 2 and 13/2.25mm/US 1

Four Small Buttons.

Silk for Embroidery.

Tension

To get these measurements it is absolutely necessary to work at a tension to produce 9 stitches to the inch in width, measured over stocking stitch

Pattern

The Left Front

Using No. 11 Needles, cast on 99 stitches.

1st row: * K1, P1, rep. from * to last st, K1.

Rep. 1st row seventeen times, inc. once at end of needle in last row.

1st row: K1, * yo, K2tog, rep. from * to last 9 sts, (K1, P1) four times, K1.

2nd and alt. rows: (K1, P1) four times, K1, purl to last st, K1.

3rd row: K1, * (K2tog, yo) twice, K1, (yo, slip 1, K1, psso) twice, K1, rep. from * to last 9 sts, (K1, P1) four times, K1.

5th row: K2, * K2tog, yo, K3, yo, slip 1, K1, psso, K3, rep. from * to last 8 sts, (P1, K1) four times.

7th row: K3, * K2tog, yo, K1, yo, slip 1, K1, psso, K5, rep. from * to last 17 sts, K2tog, yo, K1, yo, slip 1, K1, psso, K4, (P1, K1) four times.

9th row: Like 7th row.

11th row: Like 5th row.

13th row: Like 3rd row.

15th row: Like 1st row.

16th row: (K1, P1) four times, K1, purl to last st, K1.

Proceed as follows: 1st row: Knit plain to last 8 sts, ( P1 , K1) four times.

2nd row: (K1, P1) four times, K1, purl to last st, K1. **

Rep. 1st and 2nd rows fifty four times. ***

Using No. 13 Needles, proceed as follows:

1st row: K2tog twenty-one times, K3 tog. eight times, K2tog twelve times, K2, (P1, K1) four times. (51 sts)

2nd row: K1, * P1, K1, rep. from * to end of row.

Rep. 2nd row twelve times.

Using No. 11 Needles, work in stocking stitch, keeping border of 9 sts in Moss Stitch and casting off 5 sts at beg. of needle in next row, then dec. once at beg. of needle in every alt. row until 41 sts remain.

Work 18 rows without shaping.

Cast off 13 sts at beg. of needle in next row, then dec. once at neck edge in every row until 21 sts remain.

Work 2 rows without shaping.

Shape shoulder as follows:

1st row: Work to last 10 sts, turn.

2nd row: Work to end of row. Cast off. ***

The Right Front

Work to correspond with Left Front, working border and shapings at opposite ends of needle and making a buttonhole in 105th row of stocking stitch, then in every following 16th row three times. (4 buttonholes)

To make a buttonhole: K1, P1, K1, K2tog, yo, (P1, K1) twice, knit plain to end of row.

The Back

Using No. 11 Needles, cast on 171 stitches.

1st row: * K1, P1, rep. from * to last st, K1 .

Rep. 1st row seventeen times.

Proceed as follows:

** 1st row: K1, * yo, K2tog, rep. from * to end of row.

2nd and alt. rows: K1, purl to last st, K1.

3rd row: K1, * K2tog, yo, K2tog, yo, K1, (yo, slip 1, K1, psso) twice, K1, rep. from * to end of row.

5th row: K2, * K2tog, yo, K3, yo, slip 1, K1, psso, K3, rep. from * to last 9 sts, K2tog, yo, K3, yo, slip 1, K1, psso, K2.

7th row: K3, * K2tog, yo, K1, yo, slip 1, K1, psso, K5, rep. from * to last 8 sts, K2tog, yo, K1, yo, slip 1, K1, psso, K3.

9th row: Like 7th row.

11th row: Like 5th row.

13th row: Like 3rd row.

15th row: Like 1st row.

16th row: Like 2nd row. **

17th row: Knit plain.

18th row: K1, purl to last st, K1. ***

Rep. 17th and 18th rows fifty-four times.

Using No. 13 Needles, proceed as follows:

1st row: * K2tog, rep. from * to last 3 sts, K3 tog. (85 sts).

2nd row: * K1, P1, rep. from * to last st, K1.

Rep. 2nd row twelve times.

Using No. 11 Needles, work in stocking stitch casting off 5 sts at beg. of next 2 rows, then dec. once at each end of needle in next and every following alt. row until 65 sts remain.

Continue without shaping until armholes measure same as Front armholes.

Shape shoulders as follows:

1st and 2nd rows: Work to last 10 sts, turn.

3rd and 4th rows: Work to last 21 sts, turn.

5th row: Work to end of row. Cast off.

The Sleeves

Using No. 13 Needles, cast on 51 stitches.

1st row: * K1, P1, rep. from * to last st, K1.

Rep. 1st row seventeen times.

Using No. 11 Needles, work as given from ** to ** for Back.

Proceed as follows:

1st row: Knit plain.

2nd row: K1, purl to last st, K1.

Continue in stocking stitch inc. once at each end of needle in next and every following 6th row until there are 65 sts on needle.

Continue without shaping until side edge measures 7 ins. from commencement.

Dec. once at each end of needle in every row until 17 sts remain. Cast off.

Work another Sleeve m same manner.

The Collar

Using No. 11 Needles, cast on 87 stitches.

1st row: * K1, P1, rep. from * to last st, K1.

Rep. 1st row fifteen times. Cast off.

To Make Up

With a slightly damp cloth and warm iron, press lightly.

Using a flat seam, sew up side, shoulder and sleeve seams.

Sew in sleeves placing seams to side seams.

Sew collar in position 4 sts in from front edges.

Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes.

Embroider with grub roses as illustrated. Finally, press all seams.

The Matinee Jacket

21 inch underarm – 3 balls

Length from top of shoulder – 11 ins.

Length of sleeve seam – 7 ins

Four Small Buttons.

Silk for Embroidery.

The Left Front

Work as given for Left Front of Carrying Coat to **·

Rep. last 2 rows twenty-two times.

Work as given from *** to *** for Left Front of Carrying Coat.

The Right Front

Work to correspond with Left Front, working border and shapings at opposite ends of needle and making a buttonhole in 41st row of stocking stitch. then in every following 16th row three times. (4 buttonholes.)

To make a buttonhole: K1, P1, K1, K2tog, yo, (P1, K1) twice, knit plain to end of row.

The Back

Work exactly as given for Back of Carrying Coat to ***·

The Frock

Materials and Size

20 inch underarm – 3 balls

2nd row: K1, * yo, K2tog, K1, rep. from * to last 2 sts, yo, K2tog

3rd row: * K1, P1, rep. from * to last st, K1.

4th row: Knit plain.

Using No. 11 Needles, proceed as follows:

1st row: K1, (P1, K1) twice, K1, * yo, K2tog, rep. from* to last 5 sts, (K1, P1) twice, K1.

Next row: P26, cast off 19, P26.

Work 5 rows in Moss Stitch, dec. once at neck edge in every row. (21 sts)

Work 2 rows without shaping.

Shape shoulder as follows:

1st row: Work to last 10 sts, turn.

2nd row: Work to end of row. Cast off.

Join in wool at neck edge and work on remaining sts to correspond with other side.

The Back

Work exactly as given for Front to ****·

Next row: K 1, purl to last st, K1.

Continue in Moss Stitch without shaping until armholes measure same as Front armholes.

Shape shoulders as follows:

1st and 2nd rows: Work to last 10 sts, turn.

3rd and 4th rows: Work to last 21 sts, turn.

5th row: Work to end of row. Cast off.

The Sleeves

Using No. 13 Needles, cast on 45 stitches.

1st row: K1, * P1, K1, rep. from * to end of row.

Rep. 1st row seven times.

9th row: K4, * inc. once in next st, rep. from * to last 4 sts, K4. (82 sts).

Using No. 11 Needles, proceed as follows:

1st row: K1, purl to last st, K1.

2nd row: Knit plain.

Rep. 1st and 2nd rows seven times, then 1st row once.

Cast off 2 sts at beg. of needle in every row until 38 sts remain. Cast off.

Work another Sleeve in same manner.

To Make Up

With a slightly damp cloth and warm iron, press lightly.

Using a flat seam, sew up side and sleeve seams.

Sew up shoulder seams for 1 inch.

Sew in sleeves placing seams to side seams, and gathering extra fullness at top.

Using Crochet Hook, work a picot edge round neck and sleeves as follows:

1st row: 1 dc (US single Crochet) into each st

2nd row: * 4 ch, sl. st back into 1st ch, 3 dc into next 3 dc, rep. from * to end of row.

Work 2 rows of dc along shoulder openings, making 2 button loops on each front shoulder.

Sew on buttons to correspond with loops.

Thread ribbon through holes at waist

Embroider yoke with grub roses. Finally, press all seams.

The Vest

Materials and Size

18 inch underarm – 1 ball

Length from top of shoulder – 11½ ins.

A Fine Crochet Hook.

Two Small Buttons.

Pattern

The Front

Using No. 13 Needles, cast on 81 stitches.

1st row: K1, * P1, K1, rep. from * to end of row.

Rep. 1st row seventeen times.

Using No. 11 Needles, work as given from ** to ** for Back of Carrying Coat.

Proceed as follows:

1st row: Knit plain.

2nd row: K1, purl to last st, K1.

Continue in stocking stitch until work measures 8 ins. from commencement, ending with a purl row.

Cast off 5 sts at beg. of next 2 rows.

Proceed as follows:

1st row: (K1, P1) twice, K1, K2tog, knit plain to last 7 sts, K2tog tbl, (K1, P1) twice, K1.

2nd row: (K1, P1) twice, K1, purl to last 5 sts, (K1, P1) twice, K1.

Rep. 1st and 2nd rows once, then 1st row once. (65 sts)

6th row: (K1, P1) twice, K1, purl to last 5 sts, (K1, P1) twice, K1.

7th row: (K1, P1) twice, knit plain to last 4 sts, (P1, K1) twice.

Rep. 6th and 7th rows nine times, then 6th row once.

Next row: (K1, P1) twice, K19, cast off 19 sts, K19, (P1, K1) twice.

Continue working on last 23 sts as follows:

1st row: (K1, P1) twice, K1, purl to last st, K1.

2nd row: K2tog, knit plain to last 4 sts, (P1, K1) twice.

Rep. 1st and 2nd rows three times.

9th row: (K1, P1) twice, K1, purl to last st, K1.

10th row: Knit plain to last 4 sts, (P1, K1) twice.

Rep. 9th and 10th rows four times, then 9th row once. Cast off.

Join in wool at neck edge and work on remaining sts to correspond with other side.

The Back

Work exactly as given for Front.

The Neckband

Using a flat seam, sew up right shoulder seam.

With right side of work facing and using No. 13 Needles, knit up 105 sts evenly round neck.

1st row: K1, * P1, K1, rep. from * to end of row.

Rep. 1st row four times. Cast off loosely in rib.

To Make Up

With a slightly damp cloth and warm iron, press lightly.

Using a flat seam, sew up side seams.

Sew up left shoulder seam for i inch.

Using Crochet Hook, work 2 rows of dc (US single crochet) round shoulder opening, making two button loops in 2nd row on front shoulder.

Sew on buttons to correspond with loops. Finally, press all seams

The Soakers

Materials and Size

Quantity – 1 ball

Length of centre front – 9½ ins.

Length of Ribbon.

For needle sizes and tension see the pattern for the Carrying Coat above.

Pattern

Using No. 11 Needles, cast on 90 stitches.

1st row: K2, * P1, K1, rep. from * to end of row.

Rep. 1st row five times.

7th row: * K2, yo, P2tog, rep. from * to last 2 sts, K2.

Rep. 1st row seven times.

15th row: K 59, turn.

16th row: P 31, turn.

17th row: K41, turn.

18th row: P 51, turn.

19th row: K61, turn.

20th row: P71, turn.

21st row: Knit plain.

22nd row: K1, purl to last st, inc. once in last st (91 sts)

Rep. from ** to ** once as given for Back of Carrying Coat.

Next row: Knit plain.

Next row: K1, purl to last st, K1.

Rep. these 2 rows twenty times.

Continue in stocking stitch, dec. once at each end of needle in next and every alt. row seven times, then at each end of needle in every row until 47 sts remain.

Work 17 rows without shaping.

Inc. once at each end of needle in every row fourteen times, then in every alt. row eight times. (91 sts), then work to correspond with Back, omitting shaping at top.

The Legbands

With right side of work facing and using No. 13 Needles, knit up 99 sts evenly round leg.

1st row: K1, * P1, K1, rep. from * to end of row.

Rep. 1st row four times.

Cast off loosely in rib.

Work other Legband in same manner.

To Make Up

With a slightly damp cloth and warm iron, press lightly.

Using a flat seam, sew up side seams.

Thread ribbon through holes at waist

Finally, press all seams.

The Bonnet

Materials and Size

1 ball

Width all round face – 11 ins.

Fine Crochet Hook.

Length of Ribbon. Silk for Embroidery.

Pattern

Using No. 11 Needles, cast on 91 stitches.

1st row: K1, * P1, K1, rep. from * to end of row.

Rep. 1st row nine times.

Work as given from ** to ** for Back of Carrying Coat.

Proceed as follows:

1st row: Knit plain.

2nd row: K1 , purl to last st, K1.

Rep. 1st and 2nd rows twelve times, dec. once at end of needle in last row.

Proceed as follows:

1st row: * K8, K2tog, rep. from * to end of row.

2nd and alt. rows: K1, purl to last st, K1.

3rd row: * K7, K2tog, rep. from * to end of row.

5th row: * K6, K2tog, rep. from * to end of row.

7th row: * K5, K2tog, rep. from * to end of row.

9th row: * K4, K2tog, rep. from * to end of row.

11th row: * K3, K2tog, rep. from * to end of row.

13th row: * K2, K2tog, rep. from * to end of row.

15th row: * K1, K2tog, rep. from * to end of row.

Break off wool, run end through remaining sts, draw up and fasten off securely.

To Make Up

With a slightly damp cloth and warm iron, press lightly.

Using a flat seam, sew up seam for 1½ ins.

Using Crochet Hook, work a picot edge round bonnet as given round neck of frock.

Embroider with grub roses as illustrated.

Sew ribbon in position. Finally, press seam.

The Bootees

Materials and Size

Length of foot: 3½ ins – 1 ball

Length of Ribbon.

See carrying coat pattern for needle size and tension

Pattern

Using No. 13 Needles, cast on 53 stitches.

1st row: Knit plain.

2nd row: K1, yo, P25, yo, P1, yo, P25, yo, K1.

3rd and alt. rows: Knit plain.

4th row: K1, yo, P2 7, yo, P1, yo, P27, yo, K1.

6th row: K1, yo, P29, yo, P1, yo, P29, yo, K1.

Continue inc. in this manner, until 5 inc. have been worked from commencement.

Continue inc. at toe only until 10 inc. have been worked from commencement.

Work 2 rows in stocking stitch.

Proceed as follows:

1st row: K49, turn.

** 2nd row: (K1, P1) six times, K1, P2tog, turn.

3rd row: (P1, K1) six times, P1, K2tog, turn.

Rep. 2nd and 3rd rows twice.

8th row: P13, P2tog.

9th row: K13 , K2tog

Rep. 8th and 9th rows twice. **

Rep. from ** to ** once, then 8th and 9th rows, then 8th row once.

Next row: Knit plain (56 sts).

Proceed as follows:

1st row: K2, * P1, K1, rep. from * to end of row.

Rep. 1st row four times.

6th row: K2, * yo, K2tog, rep. from * to end of row.

Rep. 1st row six times.

13th row: * K1, P1, rep. from * to end of row.

14th row: * P1, K1, rep. from * to end of row.

Rep. 13th and 14th rows seven times. Cast off.

Work another Bootee in same manner.

To Make Up

With a slightly damp cloth and warm iron, press lightly.

Using a flat seam, sew up leg and foot seam.

Thread ribbon through holes at ankles.

Embroider with grub roses as illustrated. Finally, press seam.

The Mittens

Materials and Size

1 ball

Length of ribbon.

See Carrying Coat pattern for needle size and tension

Pattern

Using No. 13 Needles, cast on 49 stitches.

1st row: K1, * P1, K1, rep. from * to end of row.

Rep. 1st row thirteen times, inc. once at end of needle in last row. (50 sts)

15th row: K2, * P1, K1, rep. from* to end of row.

Rep. 15th row three times.

19th row: K2, * yo, K2tog, rep. from * to end of row.

Rep. 15th row three times.

Proceed as follows:

1st row: Knit plain.

2nd row: K1, purl to last st, K1.

Rep. 1st and 2nd rows once.

5th row: K24, (inc. once in next st) twice, K24.

Work 3 rows without shaping.

9th row: K24, inc. once in next st, K2, inc. once in next st, K24.

Continue inc. in this manner until there are 60 sts on needle.

Rep. 2nd row once.

The Thumb

Next row K36, turn, K1, P13, cast on 1 st, turn.

Work on these 15 sts as follows:

1st row: Knit plain.

2nd row: K1, purl to last st, K1.

Rep. 1st and 2nd rows twice.

7th row: * K1, K2tog, rep. from * to end of row.

8th row: Like 2nd row.

9th row: K2tog all across.

Break off wool, run end through remaining sts, draw up and fasten off.

With wrong side of work facing, join in wool, knit up 1 st from cast-on sts at base of Thumb and purl across remaining sts

Proceed as follows:

1st row: Knit plain.

2nd row: K1, purl to last st, K1.

Rep. 1st and 2nd rows eleven times.

25th row: * K1, K2tog, rep. from * to last 2 sts, K2.

26th row: Like 2nd row.

27th row: K2tog all across.

Break off wool. run end through remaining sts, draw up and fasten off securely.

Work another Mitten in same manner.

To Make Up

With a slightly damp cloth and warm iron, press lightly.

Using a flat seam sew up Thumb and side seam.

Thread ribbon through holes at wrist

Embroider with grub roses as illustrated. Finally, press all seams.
