Materials and Size

with Long or Short Sleeves

Patons Patonyle Knitting Yarn, 3-ply 80% wool, 20% nylon

20 inch underarm

Long Sleeves:

  • Main Colour – 5 balls
  • Small Quantity each of a Light and Dark Colour.

Short Sleeves:

  • Main Colour – 4 balls
  • Small Quantity each of a Light and Dark Colour.

Length from top of shoulder to lower edge, 17 ins.

Length of sleeve seam

Long, 7 ins; Short, 2½ ins.

Knitting Needles, 1 pair each UK Nos 10/3.25mm/US 3 and UK 12/2.75mm/US 2

Patons Crochet Hook, No. 12.

A Stitch Holder.

Nine Small Buttons.

One Press Stud.

Abbreviations

M. = Main Colour;

L. = Light Colour;

D. = Dark Colour;

DC. = double crochet (US single crochet)

Tension

8 stitches to the inch in width, measured over plain smooth fabric.

Pattern

The Front

Us1ng No. 10 Needles and M., cast on 32 stitches.

1st row: Knit.

2nd row: K1, purl to last st, K1.

3rd row: K8, cast off 2 sts, K12, cast off 2 sts, K8.

4th row: K1, P1, cast on 2 sts, P12, cast on 2 sts, P7, K1.

5th row: Cast on 4 sts, knit to end of row.

6th row: Cast on 4 sts, purl to end of row.

Rep. 5th and 6th rows ten times.

cast on 6 sts at beg of next 2 rows (132 sts).

Work 68 rows in stocking stitch without shaping.

Using No. 12 Needles, proceed as follows:

1st row: (K2tog, K1) sixteen times, (K2tog) eighteen times, (K1, K2tog) sixteen times. (82 sts).

2nd row: K2, * P1, K1, rep from * to end of row.

3rd row: Using D., knit.

4th row: K2, * P1, K1, rep from * to end of row. Break off D.

5th row: Using M., knit.

6th row: As 4th row. Break off M.

7th row: Using L., knit.

Rep. 4th row three times. Break off L.

11th row: Using M., knit.

12th row: As 4th row. Break off M.

13th row: Using D., knit.

14th row: As 4th row. Break off D.

15th row: Using M., knit. **

Using No. 10 Needles, proceed as follows:

1st row: K1, P35, K1, turn, leave remaining sts on stitch holder.

2nd row: Cast on 8 sts, K2, (P1, K1) three times, knit to end of row.

3rd row: K1, purl to last 8 sts, (P1, K1) four times.

4th row: K2, (P1, K1) three times, knit to end of row.

Rep. 3rd and 4th rows twelve times.

Proceed as follows:

1st row: Cast off 4 sts, purl to last 8 sts, (P1, K1) four times.

2nd row: K2, (P1, K1) three times, knit to last 2 sts, K2tog

3rd row: K1, purl to last 8 sts, (P1, K1) four times.

Continue in stocking stitch, keeping border at centre edge, dec. once at end of next and every alt. row until 37 sts remain.

Work 15 rows without shaping.

Next row: Cast off 17 sts, knit to end of row.

Continue in stocking stitch, dec. once at neck edge in every row three times. (17 sts).

Work 6 rows without shaping.

Shape shoulder as follows:

1st row: Work to last 9 sts, turn.

2nd row: Work to end of row. Cast off.

Join in wool at centre front where sts were left and proceed as follows:

1st row: (K1, P1) four times, purl to last st, K1.

2nd row: Knit to last 8 sts, (K1, P1) three times, K2.

Work to correspond with Right Front, working border and shapings at opposite ends of needle, and making a buttonhole in following 6th and 7th rows once, then in every following 9th and 10th rows four times. (5 buttonholes.)

To make a buttonhole:

1st row: Work to last 5 sts, cast off 2 sts, P1, K2.

2nd row: K1, P1, K1, cast on 2 sts, work to end of row.

The Back

Using No. 10 Needles and M., cast on 32 stitches.

1st row: Knit.

2nd row: K1, purl to last st, K1.

Work exactly as given for Front to **, omitting buttonholes.

Using No. 10 Needles, proceed as follows:

Work 27 rows in stocking stitch without shaping.

Cast off 4 sts at beg of next 2 rows, then dec. once at each end of needle in next and every alt. row until 66 sts remain.

Continue without shaping until armholes measure same as Front armholes.

Shape shoulders as follows:

1st and 2nd rows: Work to last 9 sts, turn.

3rd and 4th rows: Work to last 17 sts, turn.

5th row: Work to end of row. Cast off.

The Long Sleeves

Using No. 12 Needles and M., cast on 42 stitches.

1st row: K2, * P1, K1, rep from * to end of row.

Rep. 1st row thirteen times, inc. once at beg of needle in last row.

Using No. 10 Needles, proceed as follows:

1st row: Knit.

2nd row: K1, purl to last st, K1.

Rep. 1st and 2nd rows twice.

Continue in stocking stitch, inc. once at each end of needle in next and every following 6th row until there are 59 sts on needle.

Continue without shaping until side edge measures 7 ins. (or length desired) from commencement.

** Cast off 2 sts at beg of next 2 rows.

Dec. once at beg of next 2 rows. **

Rep. from ** to ** four times. Cast off. ***

Work another Sleeve in same manner.

The Short Sleeves

Using No. 12 Needles and M., cast on 40 stitches.

1st row: K2, * P1, K1, rep from * to end of row.

Rep. 1st row nine times.

Using No. 10 Needles, proceed as follows:

1st row: K1, * K1, inc. once in next st, rep from * to last st, K1. (59 sts).

2nd row: K1, purl to last st, K1.

3rd row: Knit.

Continue in stocking stitch until work measures 2½ ins. from commencement, ending with a purl row.

Work as given for Long Sleeves from ** to ***·

Work another Sleeve in same manner.

The Collar

Using a flat seam, sew up shoulder seams.

With right side of work facing, using No. 12 Needles and M., beg and ending 2 sts from front edges, knit up 78 stitches evenly round neck.

1st row: K2, * P1, K1, rep from * to end of row.

Rep. 1st row once. Break off M.

3rd row: Using D., knit.

4th row: Inc. once in first st, * K1, P1, rep from * to last st, inc. once in last st Break off D.

5th row: Using M., knit.

6th row: Inc. once in first st, * P1, K1, rep from * to last st, inc. once in last st Break off M.

7th row: Using L., knit.

8th row: As 4th row.

9th row: * K1, P1, rep from * to end of row.

10th row: As 6th row. Break off L.

11th row: Using M., knit.

12th row: As 4th row. Break off M.

13th row: Using D., knit.

14th row: As 6th row. Break off D.

15th row: Using M., knit.

16th row: As 4th row.

17th row: As 9th row.

Rep. 16th and 17th rows once, then 16th row once.

Cast off loosely in rib.

The Right Leg Band

Using a flat seam, sew up side seams.

With right side of work facing, using No. 12 Needles and M., knit up 88 sts evenly round leg.

1st row: K2, * P1, K1, rep from * to end of row.

Rep. 1st row twice.

4th row: K2, * P1, K1, rep from * to last 5 sts, cast off 2 sts, K1, P1, K1.

5th row: K2, P1, cast on 2 sts, work in rib to end of row.

Rep. 1st row four times. Cast off loosely in rib.

The Left Leg Band

Work to correspond with Right Leg Band, working buttonhole at opposite end of needle.

To Make Up

With a slightly damp cloth and warm iron, press lightly.

Using a flat seam, sew up sleeve seams.

Sew in sleeves, placing seams to side seams.

Sew border underlap in position.

Using Crochet Hook, work one row of dc (US single crochet) along lower edges.

Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes.

Sew press stud in position at neck. Finally, press all seams.
