Materials and Size

Patons Beehive baby Wool or Patons Baby Wool with Nylon

19-20 inch underarm – 2 balls

Length from top of shoulder – 10 ins.

Length of sleeve seam – 2 ins.

Knitting Needles, 1 pair each UK Nos. 10/3.25mm/US 3 and UK 12/2.75mm/US 2

Patons Crochet Hook, UK size No. 12/2.75mm/US C-2

Six Small Buttons.

Tension

8 stitches to the inch in width, measured over plain smooth fabric (stocking stitch) on larger needles

The Pattern

Note: This pattern uses UK crochet terms. UK double crochet = US single crochet

The Front

Using smaller needles, cast on 76 stitches

1st row: K2 * P1, K1, rep from * to end of row.

Rep 1st row twenty-one times, increase once at end of needle in last row.

Using larger needles, proceed as follows:

1st row: Knit.

2nd row: K1, purl to last st, K1.

Rep 1st and 2nd rows twenty-five times.

Proceed as follows:

1st row: K18, P2, yo, K1, yo, P2, K31, P2, yo, K1, yo, P2, K18.

2nd row: K1, P17, K2, P3, K2, P31, K2, P3, K2, P17, K1.

3rd row: Cast off 4 sts, K14, P2, K3, P2, K31, P2, K3, P2, K18.

4th row: Cast off 4 sts, P14, K2, P3tog, K2, P31, K2, P3tog, K2, P13, K1.

5th row: K2tog, K11, P7, K29, P7, K11, K2tog

6th row: K1, P11, K7, P29, K7, P11, K1.

7th row: K2tog, K8, P2, yo, K1, yo, P5, yo, K1, yo, P2, K25, P2, yo, K1, yo, P5, yo, K1, yo, P2, K8, K2tog

8th row: K1, P8, K2, P3, K5, P3, K2, P25, K2, P3, K5, P3, K2, P8, K1.

9th row: K9, P2, K3, P5, K3, P2, K25, P2, K3, P5, K3, P2, K9.

10th row: K1, P8, K2, P3tog, K5, P3tog, K2, P25, K2, P3tog, K5, P3tog, K2, P8, K1.

11th row: K8, P13, K23, P13, K8.

12th row: Knit.

13th row: K1, P1 * yo, K1, yo, P5, rep from * to last 3 sts, yo, K1, yo, P1, K1.

14th row: K2 *P3, K5, rep from * to last 5 sts, P3, K2.

15th row: K1, P1 * K3, P5, rep from *to last 5 sts, K3, P1, K1.

16th row: K2 * P3tog, K5, rep from * to last 5 sts, P3tog, K2.

17th row: K1, purl to last st, K1.

18th row: Knit.

19th row: K1, P4, yo, K1, yo, * P5, yo, K1, yo, rep from * to last 5 sts, P4, K1.

20th row: K5 *P3, K5, rep from * to end of row.

21st row: K1, P4, K3 * P5, K3, rep from * to last 5 sts, P4, K1.

22nd row: K5 * P3tog, K5, rep from * to end of row.

23rd row: As 17th row.

24th row: As 18th row. **

Rep from 13th to 16th row once.

Knitting chart for baby sweater

29th row: K1, P25, cast off 13 sts, P25, K1.

Continue in patt on last 26 sts, dec once at neck edge in every row until 21 sts remain.

Shape shoulder as follows:

1st row: K2tog, P9, turn.

2nd row: K10. Cast off.

Join in wool at neck edge and work on remaining sts to correspond with other side.

The Back

Work exactly as given for Front to **·

Continue in patt. without shaping until armholes measure same as Front armholes.

Shape shoulders as follows:

1st and 2nd rows: Work to last 10 sts, turn.

3rd and 4th rows: Work to last 20 sts, turn.

5th row: Work to end of row. Cast off.

The Sleeves

Using smaller needles, cast on 46 stitches.

1st row: K2 * P1, K1, rep from * to end of row.

Rep 1st row eight times.

10th row: K1, inc. once in next st, P1 * inc. once in next st, P1, K1, P1, rep from * to last 3 sts, inc. once in next st, P1, inc. once in last st (59 sts).

Using larger needles, proceed as follows:

1st row: K1, purl to last st, K1.

2nd row: Knit.

(If you prefer a chart, use the pattern chart above, renaming row 13 as row 3 and so on)

3rd row: K1, P1 * yo, K1, yo, P5, rep from * to last 3 sts, yo, K1, yo, P1, K1.

4th row: K2 * P3, K5, rep from * to last 5 sts, P3, K2.

5th row: K1, P1 * K3, P5, rep from * to last 5 sts, K3, P1, K1.

6th row: K2 * P3tog, K5, rep from * to last 5 sts, P3tog, K2.

7th row: As 1st row.

8th row: As 2nd row.

9th row: K1, P4, yo, K1, yo, * P5, yo, K1, yo, rep from * to last 5 sts, P4, K1.

10th row: K5 *P3, K5, rep from * to end of row.

11th row: K1, P4, K3 * P5, K3, rep from * to last 5 sts, P4, K1.

12th row: K5 * P3tog, K5, rep from * to end of row.

Keeping continuity of pattern, dec once at each end of needle in next and every alt row until 39 sts remain, then at each end of every row until 27 sts remain.

Cast off.

Work another Sleeve in same manner.

The Front Neckband

With right side of work facing and using smaller needles, knit up 40 sts evenly along front of neck.

1st row: K2 * P1, K1, rep from * to end of row.

Rep 1st row four times. Cast off in rib.

The Back Neckband

Work as given for Front Neckband, knitting up 30 sts instead of 40 sts

To Make Up

With a slightly damp cloth and warm iron, press lightly.

Using a flat seam, sew up side, and sleeve seams.

Sew up shoulder seams for ½ inch.

Sew in sleeves, placing seams to side seams.

Using Crochet Hook, work 1 row of dc round shoulder openings, making 3 button loops on each front shoulder.

Sew on buttons to correspond with loops. Finally, press all seams.
