Materials and Size

Patons Beehive Lady Betty 3-Ply

20 inch underarm – 3 balls

Length from top of shoulder, 10½ ins.

Length of sleeve from underarm, 7 ins.

Knitting Needles, 1 pair each UK Nos 11/3mm/US 3 and UK 12/2.75mm/US 2

Small quantity of embroidery floss for embroidery.

Tension

To get these measurements it is absolutely necessary to work at a tension to produce 9 stitches to the inch in width, measured over stocking stitch

Pattern

The Left Front

Using larger needles, cast on 139 stitches.

1st row: (Wrong side of work) K1, purl to last st, K1.

2nd row: Knit plain.

Rep 1st row once.

4th row: K1, * yo, K2tog, K1, rep from * to end of row.

Rep 1st and 2nd rows once.

7th row: Cast off 87 sts, purl to last st, K1.

With right side of work facing and using a fine spare needle, pick up 52 sts from cast-on edge, place at back of needle in use.

8th row: Knit plain, knitting tog. one st from each needle to form a hem (52 sts).

9th and alt rows: Inc once in first st, purl to last st, K1.

10th row: K15, slip 1, K1, psso, K32, K2tog, inc once in next st, K1.

12th row: Knit plain to last 2 sts, inc once in next st, K1.

14th row: Like 12th row.

16th row: K15, slip 1, K1, psso, K30, K2tog, K6, inc once in next st, K1.

18th and 20th rows: Like 12th row.

22nd row: K15, slip 1, K1, psso, K28, K2tog, K12, inc once in next st, K1.

23rd and alt rows: K1, purl to last st, K1.

24th and 26th rows: Knit plain.

28th row: K15, slip 1, K1, psso, K26, K2tog, K15.

Work 5 rows in stocking stitch without shaping.

34th row: K15, slip 1, K1, psso, K24, K2tog, K15. (56 sts)

Continue working in this manner, dec twice in every 6th row, until 42 sts remain.

Work 5 rows without shaping.

Cast off 4 sts at beg of next row, then dec once at beg of needle in every alt row four times. (34 sts).

Work 24 rows without shaping.

Cast off 10 sts at beg of next row, then dec once at neck edge in every row, until 18 sts remain.

Work 3 rows without shaping.

Shape shoulder as follows:

1st row: Work to last 9 sts, turn.

2nd row: Work to end of row.

Cast off.

The Right Front

Work to correspond with Left Front, working shapings at opposite ends of needle, and working K2tog, instead of slip 1, K1, psso, and slip 1, K1, psso, instead of K2tog.

The Back

Using larger needles, cast on 130 stitches.

1st row: (wrong side of work) K1, purl to last st, K1.

2nd row: Knit plain.

Rep 1st row once.

4th row: K1, * yo, K2tog, K1, rep from * to end of row.

Rep 1st and 2nd rows once, then 1st row once.

With right side of work facing and using a fine spare needle, pick up 130 sts from cast on edge, place at back of needle in use.

8th row: Knit plain, knitting tog one st from each needle to form a hem. (130 sts).

9th row: Like 1st row.

10th row: K15, slip 1, K1, psso, K32, K2tog, K28, slip 1, K1, psso, K32, K2tog, K15.

Work 5 rows in stocking stitch without shaping.

16th row: K15, slip 1, K1, psso, K30, K2tog, K28, slip 1, K1, psso, K30, K2tog, K15.

Continue in this manner, dec four times in every following 6th row, until 82 sts remain.

Work 5 rows without shaping.

Cast off 4 sts at beg of next 2 rows, then dec once at each end of needle, in next, and every alt row, until 66 sts remain.

Continue working in stocking stitch until armholes measure same as Front armholes.

Shape shoulders as follows:

1st and 2nd rows: Work to last 9 sts, turn.

3rd and 4th rows: Work to last 18 sts, turn.

5th row: Work to end of row.

Cast off.

The Sleeves

Using smaller needles, cast on 40 stitches.

1st row: (wrong side of work) K1, purl to last st, K1.

2nd row: Knit plain.

Rep 1st row once.

4th row: K1, * yo, K2tog, K1, rep from * to end of row.

Rep 1st and 2nd rows once, then I st row once.

With right side of work facing, and using a fine spare needle, pick up 40 sts from cast on edge, place at back of needle in use.

8th row: Knit plain, knitting tog one st from each needle to form a hem (40 sts)

Using larger needles, proceed as follows:

1st row: K1, purl to last st, K1.

2nd row: K1, * inc once in next st, rep from * to last st, K1. (78 sts)

Continue working in stocking stitch until work measures 7 ins. from commencement.

Dec once at each end of needle in every row, until 26 sts remain. Cast off.

Work another Sleeve in same manner.

The Neck-Band

Using a flat seam, sew up shoulder seams.

Fold back 2 rows along Front borders, and sew to Jacket.

With right side of work facing, and using smaller needles, knit up 86 stitches evenly round neck.

1st row: K1, purl to last st, K1.

2nd row: Knit plain.

3rd row: Like 1st row.

4th row: K2, * yo, K2tog, K1, rep from * to end of row.

Rep 1st and 2nd rows once, then 1st row once. Cast off.

To Make Up

With a slightly damp cloth and warm iron, press lightly.

Using a flat seam, sew up side and sleeve seams.

Sew in sleeves, placing seams to side seams.

Fold back 3 rows round neck-band, and sew in position.

Embroider with grub roses. Sew ribbon in position.

Finally, press all seams
