Aluminum Crochet Hook No. 4 or E or size required to get gauge.
It is very important that you get the given gauge. Use a larger or smaller hook if necessary.

NOTE: Cape may be made inches longer with 1 extra skein. Can also be made floor length by working even, and buying double the amount of yarn. Cape is worked from the neck down. Arm openings may be omitted by skipping the instruction for same, but being sure to work all incs indicated.

NOTE: All incs or decs are made in double crochet sections. If 1 inc is indicated work 2 dc in center st of section. If 2 incs are indicated work 2 dcs in each end st of section. To dec just omit a dc at end. The space referred to is the one created by the dc, ch 1, dc all in one st of prev row.

___
Chain loosely 58 (58-64-64) sts, then sc in 2nd st from hook. Sc across row to end, ch 3.

___ROW 1:
Dc in each of next 2 sts, *ch 1, skip 1 st, (dc, ch 1, dc) all in next st, ch 1, skip 1 st, dc in each of next 3 sts; rep from*, across row, ch 3.

___ROW 2:
Work 3 (3-4-4) dc over 2 dc of prev row*, ch 1, skip 1 st, (dc, ch 1, dc) in space of prev row, ch 1, skip 1 st, work 4 (4-5-5) dc over 3 dc of prev row; rep from*, across row. Continue in this manner, inc'ing 1 dc in each dc section every row until there are 7 (8-9-10) dcs in each dc section. Now continue in pattern, inc'ing 1 st each section every other row until there are 18 (19-20-21) dc in each section. Piece should measure about 14" down front
edge.

___SHAPE ARM OPENING: Due to varying heights and arm lengths, check to be sure this is the point at which you want to begin top edge of your opening. Pattern is worked even from hereon so would be a simple matter to lower opening. If desired, openings may be omitted, just working even to desired length. For opening, work across first dc section, on across openwork, ending with work 3 dc in each of first 3 dc after openwork. Turn, ch 3, work dc in each of 2 dc of prev row, work pattern back to beg. Repeat last 2 rows until there are 11 (11-12-12) rows in this section. Break yarn for 2 smaller sizes, only. With another skein and beg at top of opening, ch 3 and work in pattern across to within 3 dc of last openwork, turn and chaining 3 each time work pattern on these sts until this section is same length as first section. Break yarn for all sizes. Attach yarn at top of last section and work to match first section. Break yarn for 2 larger sizes only. Beg with yarn left attached work even in pattern across all sts until cape measures about 25 inches or desired length.

___ARM OPENING BANDS: Work 5 rows sc along outside edge of opening. Then work scallop trim. See below. Work 1 row sc along inside edge. Slip st ends in place as shown.

___FRONT BANDS: Work 5 rows sc up each front, working buttonholes on right side in 3rd row. Make first buttonhole about 1½" from top as top hole will be in neckband. Make 4 or 5 buttonholes as follows:  ch 2, skip 2 sc of prev row, then in following row work 2 sc in each buttonhole.

___NECK BANDS: Work 5 rows sc around neck edge, making buttonhole in 3rd row on right side to correspond to others. Sew buttons to correspond.

___SCALLOP TRIM: Attach yarn and *ch 3, dc in same st, skip 2 sts, sc in next st; rep from*, across row. On other than sc edges skip just enough space to make scallops even.

___BERET: Make a loop on hook, sc in loop, then ch 3, dc 14 times in loop, slip st to join, ch 3.

___ROUND 1:
Dc in next st, * (dc, ch 1, dc) in next st, dc in each of next 2 sts; rep from*, around to beg, ending (dc, ch 1, dc) in last st, Slip st to join.

___ROUND 2: Ch 3, work 3 dc in first 2 sts, *ch 1, (dc, ch 1, dc) in space made by ch 1 of prev round, ch 1, work 4 dc in 2 dc of prev rnd ; rep from*, ending ch 1, (dc, ch 1, dc) in last space, ch 1. Slip st to join. Continue in this manner inc'ing 1 dc each side of each dc section every round until there are 22 dc in each dc section. Beret should measure about 12 inches across. Continuing the same pattern, but decreasing by working 1 dc less on each side of each dc section every round until there are 16 dcs in each dc section. Ch 1, then work sc around brim, slip st to join, then work scallop trim around edge.

Please do not post this pattern to any other website.  You may post a link to this page for other users.  If you make the pattern, please let me know how it turned out, yarn information, hook size used, etc.  I will note your comments for future users.

This pattern has been checked with the original printed pattern twice. It is "exactly" as printed in the original publication. No guarantees are made as to the accuracy of the original pattern.  I have probably not made the pattern and will not know how to support your crochet questions.  Thanks!!
